What is Shikshapatri?

The Shikshapatri stands as one of the fundamental scriptures of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. Written in the Hari Mandap, Vadtal, Gujarat, on February 12, 1826 CE (Maha Sud 5, Vikram Samvat Year 1882), this 212-verse scripture was gifted by Lord Shree Swaminarayan for the benefit of His disciples and followers. Serving as a comprehensive guide to conduct, it addresses a wide array of subjects including civic norms, health, hygiene, attire, diet, etiquette, diplomacy, finance, education, friendship, morality, habits, penance, religious obligations, festivities, and more. The teachings encompass guidelines relevant to devotees of all ages and backgrounds – men and women; married or single; householders or ascetics. It embodies the essence of various Scriptures such as the Vedas. In Verse 209, Lord Shree Swaminarayan proclaims that His words within the Shikshapatri embody His Divine presence.

Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan assigned Nityanand Swami the task of translating the Shikshapatri from its original Sanskrit into Gujarati to enable adherents in Gujarat to recite and adhere to Lord Shree Swaminarayan's teachings. Subsequently translated into numerous other languages, Shree Swaminarayan Temple Bhuj has been actively involved in creating versions in multiple languages to extend accessibility to this divine Scripture. The Shikshapatri App currently offers translations in Sanskrit, Gujarati, Hindi, English, English Lipi, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swahili with plans for additional languages in upcoming releases.
